After this, we are going to brief readers with Student Data Transparency and Security Act passed by Colorado. Alike European GDPR Law for protection of customers data, this act is passed to secure students information. So, let’s begin!

Growing age of a kid from school to college is stressful moment for parents because, in this age, wards get easily attracted towards the online market. The digitization attraction leads to worry of potential identity theft among parents. As per the Consumer report, it is being found that college kids require more identity theft protection. Students have to protect their identity on the web to be safe from unexpected and terrific cybercrimes.

Preventive Measures For Students

  1. Don’t Be Quite, If Your Ward is Facing Cyberbullying – The very first measure to protect student identities is cyberharassment or cyberbullying, which is a form of harassment through electronic means. It is also known as online bullying that is caused when someone, especially teenagers, harasses other individuals on social media. It can be a torturing situation for a student because the incident comprises of sexual comments, victims personal record, posting irrelevant photos or posts, etc. To deal with Cyberbullying, parents are recommended to establish a friendly relation with their kids so that if in case online harassment takes place, kid inform you immediately. Also, parents are suggested not to ignore these complaints and take sudden action.
  2. Be Careful While Surfing Social Media – Students feel happy while making new friends on their social media accounts because they aim at increasing their friend list. They post different photos and status of what they are currently doing or what is recently going in their life. But, this kind of activeness on social media alert business users when their dorm rooms are totally unfilled. Parents should guide college students to enhance their account privacy settings. They should aware kids that before posting anything on social media we should think twice.
  3. Use Credit Card Instead of Debit Card – Parents should not allow students with use of personal debit cards. They should provide their ward with credit card to be used on online websites or smartphone applications like Uber, Flipkart, Amazon, etc. These apps are widely used among students and, keeping a credit card linked to account on the particular application will help kid in staying protected. This measure to protect student identities recommend the use of credit card because even if hacking takes place then, only reward points and Starbucks will be in the hand of attacker.
  4. Never Ever Save Your Credit Card Details – Students should avoid saving of card information on applications like Ola, Uber, or anywhere else. Whenever they want to proceed the payment, enter the credit card information and then continue with the transaction. Even if a sudden data breach incident took place in an enterprise then, being a customer of that particular firm your card information is safe because it was not saved in breached enterprise.

Student Data Transparency and Security Act

There are around 35 states who are using student privacy law to protect student identities. The recent law was passed by Colorado that is named as Student data transparency and security act (SDTSA). The Colorado SDTSA was originated to identify the concerns over what is happening with the personal students and how are they maintained throughout the educational procedure. Drafters recognized that there exists a need to protect broad area of information from misuse. Student data transparency and security act is a practice to maintain balance between use and protection of student data.

Student Personally Identifiable Information – SPII (or Student personally identifiable information) is one of the core parts in SDTSA. The Colorado SDTSA defines SPII as ‘the information that, individually or in a group, personally addresses a single child or parent, and which is gathered, maintained, inferred, or originated by a public educational entity’. This vast definition of SPII only states one thing that ‘High-level protection & attention is required on information that defines students’ and parents’ personal identity either in direct or indirect manner.’

The purpose of Colorado act is to render consistent protection to student identities in the educational system and all associated with it. Schools have to acquire and post student data privacy and protection policy. They need to ensure that whosoever is holding or using their student’s record should adhere to the same set of policy. The student data transparency and security act imposes strict requirements of SPII over all the entities that are doing their business with the Department of Education like schools and colleges. It requires maintenance of an integrated information security applications and, report on unauthorized SPII release.
